Importing a Squarespace blog

Squarespace has a built in method for exporting for WordPress by creating an XML file.

After following their guide for exporting your content, you will end up with an .xml file.
Next, log into your self-hosted WordPress blog, and click on “Tools” –> “Import”
In the Import screen, click to install the WordPress Importer plugin (if not already installed).
After the plugin is installed, click to activate the plugin. If the importer does not run immediately, return to “Tools” –> “Import” and click the WordPress Importer again.
In the Import screen, click the button to choose the file you downloaded from your old site and click the “Upload file and import” button. Your XML file will upload to your new WordPress site. Be patient – you will be taken to the following screen when the file has finished loading.

What happens to my images?

This process may bring in your images as well, but you will want to make sure they their urls represent your WordPress upload pathway. It’s possible your images won’t migrate with the rest of your content. Squarespace’s own documentation hints that the images import better into WordPress.com vs self-hosted WordPress sites (which is what ProPhoto needs). Instead, your images may stay hotlinked to Squarespace, meaning they will appear on your site referencing the original location. In that case, as soon as you canceled your Squarespace account, the images would no longer be visible in WordPress.

If the importer does not pull in your images to the WordPress Media Library than you’ll want to try to use the Import external images into WordPress plugin for pulling in those images.
